Erie Neighborhood House is a social services nonprofit providing 11 different cradle to career services for low-income, primarily immigrant families in Chicago’s West Town, Humboldt Park, and Little Village neighborhoods. Our Little Village Literacy Programs, is seeking an intern. The Literacy Programs intern will gain experience working with Adult English Language Learners in the classroom and working with our children’s reading afterschool program, proving literacy services for children in need of additional reading support. In addition, the Intern will gain experience with administering assessments, data and survey collections, Salesforce data management and collaborate with staff in lesson and event planning. The intern will get to observe the day to day administration of nonprofit programing, including needs assessment, outcome/funding evaluation, and volunteer management. This position reports directly to the Literacy Programs Manager. The primary responsibility of the Literacy Programs Intern is to support the students and program staff though direct classroom service, data entry/reporting and collaborative planning. Other duties may also be assigned as needed.
Responsibilities:
• Be onsite during program time to work with students and volunteers, facilitate daily activities and encourage student participation.
• Provide classroom support to English Language Instructors on technology days, including but not limited to lesson plan assistance, trouble shooting students tech issues during class, assisting students with low tech literacy.
• Help with room and supply set up and clean up.
• Promote an inclusive and safe class community where students’ experiences and assets are resources for learning.
• Accompany program staff to volunteer recruitment events.
• With the help of the Literacy Coordinator plan, promote and facilitate family reading nights.
• Document outcomes and student successes in Salesforce data base and CMAA vouchers. Intern will be trained on data entry and reporting methods.
• Help maintain an organized filing system.
• Administer assessments, including but not limited to F&P BAS system, CASAS, student surveys, parent surveys.
Intern will be trained on each type of assessment administration.
• Participate in regular Erie Neighborhood House staff meetings, curriculum meetings, and events.
• Perform other related duties as necessary.
Requirements:
• Ability to work well with a diverse group of learners, collaborate with the Erie team and volunteer tutors, and perform program administrative duties.
• Commitment to social justice and sensitivity to the assets and challenges of a diverse group of learners.
• Pass a CPS State of IL background check
• Spanish fluency is a plus
